Atlantis, What do We Know?

Stargate Atlantis - The Complete Third Season

Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science (Popular Science)

There is magic in names and the mightiest among these words of magic is Atlantis. When we have pronounced this word, nothing definite is revealed, but it is as if a sudden shaft of sunlight smote through the darkness of the past, allowing us a glimpse of cloud-capped towers, and gorgeous palaces, and solemn temples; and It is as if this vision of a lost culture touched the most hidden thoughts of our soul.
H. G. Wells

Timaeus and Critias (Penguin Classics)

On this Island of Atlantis had arisen a powerful and remarkable dynasty of kings, who ruled the whole island, and many other islands as well and parts of the continent; in addition it controlled, within the strait, Libya up to the borders of Egypt and Europe as far as Tyrrhenia. (Tyrrhenia was a region of Central Italy located in an area that covered part of what now are Tuscany, Latium, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria.)

The Destruction of Atlantis: Compelling Evidence of the Sudden Fall of the Legendary Civilization

The early third-century historian Marcellus wrote a chronicle, only fragments of which survive, that told of human and natural events in the vicinity of Mauretania, then a Roman client kingdom located along the northwestern shores of Africa below the Pillars of Heracles.

His work, entitled An Ethiopic History, described the Guanche natives of Tenerife, largest of the Canary Islands. He wrote that they “preserved a recollection transmitted to them by their ancestors of the island of Atlantis, which was extremely large for a long time held sway over all the islands of the Atlantic Ocean.”

Darwin’s Mistake: Antediluvian Discoveries Prove Dinosaurs and Humans Co-Existed

Plato did not choose the first person narrative for his story of Atlantis. He also called everyone who attempted to interpret the story as a mythology, a liar. Socrates, Plato’s teacher, states in the Timaeus: “… and has the very great advantage of being a fact and not a fiction.” Today’s scientific research has confirmed the geographic and geologic specifications given in Plato’s Atlantis narrative.

Of all the mythical or “archetypal” images this (Atlantis) is the one most deeply seated in my imagination.
