(Tyrrhenia was a region of Central Italy located in an area that covered part of what now are Tuscany, Latium, Emilia-Romagna and Umbria.)

The early third-century historian Marcellus wrote a chronicle, only fragments of which survive, that told of human and natural events in the vicinity of Mauretania, then a Roman client kingdom located along the northwestern shores of Africa below the Pillars of Heracles.

His work, entitled An Ethiopic History, described the Guanche natives of Tenerife, largest of the Canary Islands. He wrote that they “preserved a recollection transmitted to them by their ancestors of the island of Atlantis, which was extremely large for a long time held sway over all the islands of the Atlantic Ocean.”

Plato did not choose the first person narrative for his story of Atlantis. He also called everyone who attempted to interpret the story as a mythology, a liar. Socrates, Plato’s teacher, states in the Timaeus: “… and has the very great advantage of being a fact and not a fiction.” Today’s scientific research has confirmed the geographic and geologic specifications given in Plato’s Atlantis narrative.
