Wildfire burning in Orange County

A wildfire spurred by strong Santa Ana winds is burning out of control in the vicinity of Santiago and Silverado Canyons near the Portola Parkway and the 241 toll road tonight.

By 8 p.m. the flames had burned through Hicks Canyon and were at the edge of Jeffery Road and Portola Parkway, according to Kris Concepcion, an Orange County Fire Authority battalion chief.

  • Both the Saugus Union School District and the Castaic School District have announced that there will be no school tomorrow, Monday, Oct. 22, 2007
  • The following road closures are in affect:
    • Sierra Highway and David Way
    • Bouquet Canyon and David Way
    • Bouquet and Vasquez Canyon
    • Aqua Dulce and Sierra Highway
    • Sierra Highway and Vasquez Canyon
    • Whites Canyon and Steinway

San Diego Fire Alert

  • The Harris Fire that began early Sunday morning about 70 miles east of San Diego has burned 2,500 acres between Tecate and Harris Ranch Road and injured at least four firefighters and killed one person.
  • The fire broke out about 9:30 a.m. east of Harris Ranch Road, north of state Route 94.
  • By noon, evacuations had been ordered of 100 homes and other structures on
    • Potrero Park Road to the south
    • North of state Route 94,
    • West of Harris Ranch Road
    • East of Potrero Valley Road
  • Route 94 has been closed between Forest Gate Road and state Route 188.
  • At 12:45 p.m., the fire was threatening homes near Tecate and had become well established on the south side of 94.
  • Sheriff’s officials were ordering evacuations of homes along Emery Road, and were preparing to shelter-in-place the Tecate area.
  • After 1 p.m. the Harris Fire near Potrero crossed state Route 188.
  • A shelter for evacuees was set up at Steele Canyon High School on Route 94.
  • Before 2 p.m. four firefighters were injured when their engine was engulfed by flames from the Harris Fire.
  • California Highway Patrol had lost radio contact with one fire crew.
  • The fire is being being fueled by 35 mile per hour.
  • More than 300 firefighters were battling the blaze from the land and air.
  • The San Diego Humane Society was arranging to receive large animals in fields near the Jamul Fire Station.
