Cats and Music

A Cat Listening to Stevie Wondervia cat music

I’ve a cat named “Come My Girl.” She’s 7 years old. She likes to purr much :) I’ve been watching her carefully for years. Many people think that cats have no mimics. Wrong. When they’re happy or opposite, you can see that in their face, especially eyes. Anyways…

I love to discover new sounds and create soundscapes. 2 days ago, I’ve burned some of my music into a CD and start to listen. My cat, “Come My Girl” was sleeping in her basket. When I play this:

(let’s call it cat music) She woke up immediately and started to listen carefully. You could understand it from her ear moves. Also she’s analyzing the music carefully. It was a great experience for me to watch her. Then…

A question popped into my mind…

What about other cats? I gave the CD to my nephew, he played the music to my sister’s cat named Pinky. (female) According to my nephew, Pinky acted exactly same as my cat. Interesting. Our next experience will be the other cat in our family: Panda. (male)

Music For Pets

After my unexpected cat music experience, I searched Google to see is there a cat music market? Answer is yes. There’re tons of pet music websites. Not only for cats, for dogs and horses…

They’re naming pet music as “calming music for animals” or “relaxation music for pets.”

According to petsandmusic.com, “A well-adjusted pet owner will soon have a well-adjusted cat, and a hectic cat will soon have a nervous owner.” I agree but… I cannot make myself sure that relaxation music works. This is another market for money making. People setup websites to sell music to pet owners and I guess, they try all the marketing mambo jambos. They say, “calming music for animals and their owners” or “PET OWNER’S LOVE IT TOO!” Pet owners know what relaxation is and from anthropomorphic point of view, they think if it works for themeselves, it works for their pets too. That’s the center of marketing music for pets, as far as I can see.

Well, I love to meditate. For me, meditation means watching innerself peacefully. According to my meditation experience, without intention and awareness there’s no meditation or relaxation. So, my question is, do pets listen sounds and enjoy music like their owners? I’m not sure. If you know scientific experiments on pets and human music, please share with me.

I see doctors at their marketing websites. They all talk good about pet music and emphasize “pet music is good for pet owners too.” There’s a broad belief that doctors speak truth all the time. Obviously doctors have an authoritative, instead dictative effect on human mind. Marketers know this well and embed doctors’ titles to their marketing text.

Are All Doctors Reliable?

I don’t think so. They’re human beings just like you and me. That’s why I’m sceptical on solidity of marketing texts. Check these news titles:
